FAQ

Coffee Filters

While our filters are technically compostable, their breakdown depends on the waste management capabilities where you live. When they reach the end of their brewing life, they can be easily repurposed—as potting mesh, oil strainers or seed sprouters.

🧵 Strength & Reusability Unlike paper, which weakens and tears when wet, silk stays strong and flexible. Its long, continuous fibers allow it to withstand repeated brews without losing shape — meaning it’s reusable dozens (even hundreds) of times, where paper is single-use.

🌎 A single silk filter can replace hundreds of disposable paper filters. It’s biodegradable, naturally produced, and requires minimal processing—making it both eco-friendly and cost-efficient over time.

☕ Silk’s filament structure is long, continuous, and naturally smooth (unlike the short, fuzzy staples of cotton). That means less clogging and faster flow, maintaining an even drip and cleaner extraction—perfect for coffee or tea brewing.

💪 Silk is one of the strongest natural fibers, even stronger than cotton of the same thickness. It can handle repeated wet/dry cycles without deforming or tearing, making it more reusable and long-lasting.

We’ve engineered this silk to be tough—denim-tough—but without all the dye baths and metal salts. The secret? Silk doesn’t need help being strong. Before it’s ever glossed up for fashion, it’s already a natural powerhouse. What you’re looking at here is silk in its wild form.

Our silk coffee filters are proudly made in Vietnam, sourced from a network of sericulture villages, skilled weavers and tailors who have carried the craft for generations. Over years of collaboration, we’ve built lasting relationships rooted in trust, transparency, and shared craftsmanship. Each meter of silk reflects this partnership—locally woven, and globally respected. We take pride not only in where our silk comes from, but in the people and traditions that make it possible.

Our silk is food-grade and completely safe for contact with coffee and water. It’s made from 100% unbleached mulberry silk—no metallic weighting, no dyes. Unlike traditional silk processed for the fashion industry, ours is cleaned and woven straight from the cocoon, with minimal intervention. It’s also pesticide-free—after all, why would we use chemicals on such delicate creatures? Mulberry silkworms are highly sensitive to additives, even in the leaves they eat, which means the silk they produce is as pure and natural as it gets. Just be sure to give your filter a quick clean before the first use.

You can absolutely switch between light, medium and dark roasts—just give your filter a deep clean before doing so, especially if you’re particular about flavor. For the best clarity and consistency, we recommend dedicating one filter to each bean or roast profile.

Coffee filter Care

1. Carefully remove the filter from your pour-over brewer (it may be hot).

2. Unfold the filter and discard the grounds.

3. Rinse thoroughly under water. Do not wring—the silk is delicate when wet.

4. Reshape the filter by folding it back, then lay flat to dry, folded. Allow to dry completely between uses.

For a deeper clean to remove coffee buildup, give it a gentle scrub with a clean fine brush once a week—just like you would with cotton—then soak and boil it for 10 minutes in a 1:3 mix of white vinegar and water to dissolve oils and residue. Give a cold rinse of water and let dry completely.

Think of it as your filter’s spa day — a little soak, and it’s back to brewing fresh.

Reshape the filter by folding it back into form, then lay it flat (folded) to dry completely between uses. Silk has a natural memory, so once it dries, it’ll hold those creases perfectly — ready for your next brew. Tip: Lay it on top of your brewer — the airflow helps it dry faster, or hang it up folded if you prefer.

Sometimes our filters may feel a bit like creased paper—that’s the beauty of the material. Just re-wet it before brew and it will return to its original shape.

To restore fold lines, soak your filter in warm water for about 10 minutes, then remove and refold while it’s still damp. lay flat to dry.

Alternatively, use a clothes steamer — fold the filter and gently steam along the creases. If you’re particular about cleanliness, place a clean cloth over the silk while steaming to keep it spotless.

You can’t turn a coffee filter back to bright white—and honestly, that’s the beauty of it. Every stain’s a badge of honor, proof of mornings survived and experiments gone right (or wrong). Think of it less like a coffee filter and more like a diary—each brew leaving its own signature. Over time, it becomes less “used” and more seasoned, like your favorite pan or that pillow you refuse to wash.

We recommend changing your filter every six months—but that’s just a ballpark. It really depends on how often you brew. What matters more is giving it a little reset every six weeks: just boil or steep it in 100°C (212°F) water for about five minutes, and it’ll be ready for many more cups to come.

After prolonged use, moisture can sometimes lead to mold or bacterial growth. If your filter develops an unusual smell or appearance and you’re unsure what it is — play it safe and replace it.
